Volunteer stories: Dr Cathy Pollock

Dr Cathy Pollock BVSc is a Veterinarian from Lyttleton. Cathy was one of our team leads on our March trips to Samoa and she shared her volunteer experience with us.

“I was fortunate to participate in the SPAW Samoa clinic in March 2025. The field trip was my third with SPAW. Each time I have volunteered, I have left with a deep appreciation for the impact we make on so many animals lives.

“Prior to the clinic, the full team had all met online for a SPAW briefing as part of their policy to ensure we are provided with as much information pre trip as possible. However, we only met in person on arrival into Samoa and we managed to gel quickly.

“March in Samoa is very hot which makes field work challenging, however the locals were so generous in feeding and looking after us that the days flowed. The case load was demanding and non-stop but the team were dedicated and determined to treat as many animals as possible.

“It was heartening to see the locals turn up in large numbers with their dogs and cats – their pets were an important part of the family and we saw many young children accompanying their parents.  There was always an inquisitive group of children turn up once school had finished.

“At the end of our week, the local community honoured us with a traditional farewell feast and presented us with beautiful hand made gifts, a reminder of the connections we had formed. The strong sense of community and a willingness to support our efforts made a lasting impression on me.

“If you are considering volunteering, I recommend it, however, be prepared for hard work and long days. Engaging with the local community is important – so take time to appreciate the culture, the people and the beautiful surrounds. Bring your sense of humour and an open heart.”
