A journey inspired by SPAW: Vea Funaki, from Tonga to Massey University
“I’m currently studying for a Bachelor of Animal Science (BAnSci) at Massey University in Palmerston North, New Zealand – a journey that began in 2015 when I first encountered the South Pacific Animal Welfare (SPAW) team. At the time, I was working as an assistant in the Livestock Division of Tonga’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, having left university to support my family.

“Working alongside SPAW’s volunteer veterinarians was a turning point. Their compassion, skill and dedication opened my eyes to the importance of animal welfare and inspired me to pursue a Bachelor of Animal Science, with the goal of becoming a veterinarian.
“When SPAW isn’t in Tonga, I continue our important work on the ground – helping animals, assisting with treatments and promoting responsible pet ownership in my community. Over the years, I’ve seen a real shift: more people are bringing their animals for care and awareness around animal welfare is growing.
“SPAW’s ongoing presence has made a lasting impact in Tonga. Their free veterinary services and educational outreach have transformed lives – both human and animal. I’m deeply grateful to be part of this work and proud to contribute to a mission that continues to uplift communities across the Pacific.
“I am currently in my final exams and will return home to Tonga in December. I look forward to helping the December SPAW team when they arrive.”
