Mani and Michelle are finally reunited
Last Thursday, Michelle and her husband made the long journey to Auckland to bring Mani home. When they arrived at the quarantine facility, they were met with an unexpected wave of affection – the staff had all read Mani’s story and were completely besotted with him. It was clear he had been cherished and cared for throughout his stay.
The MPI veterinarian who signed Mani’s release was especially moved. She is soon heading to Samoa for work, and Mani’s story resonated deeply with her, connecting her to the dogs she will meet there. Moments like these remind us just how many hearts Mani’s journey has touched.
When the quarantine team brought Mani out, he burst with excitement – a whirlwind of wagging tail, joyful energy and endless cuddles. He made everyone laugh with his antics. Once in the car, he was a little nervous, but quickly settled as long as he could stay close and keep a paw or nose touching Michelle. Overwhelmed with relief and emotion, she cried for much of the drive home.
They made him a cosy little bed stretching from the back seat to the console, and Mani was perfectly content. The trip home was long, with plenty of toilet breaks and walks, but at 8:30pm on Friday night, Mani finally walked through the doors of his forever home.
“It still feels surreal. After everything he has endured, Mani looks incredible – strong, bright-eyed and resilient beyond measure,” explained Michelle.
“Today, he met the other dogs, and all he wanted to do was play. There wasn’t a hint of aggression from any of them. He has already claimed his favourite spot: perched on the back of the sofa, where he climbs up to snuggle whenever he’s ready for a nap. He is such a loving wee man, and he has already woven himself into the fabric of our lives.”
Now begins the chapter they’ve been waiting for – loving Mani, caring for him and giving him the life he always deserved.
